My mini survAIval insight of the week

So, I just finished "The Coming Wave" by Mustafa Suleyman, and the main takeaway is this:

“Chaos is coming, even if we do something about it.”

Nope, it is not a philosophy book, even though the author studied it in university (as well as theology). The book discusses how technology has transformed us throughout history and how powerful it can be for both good and bad.

Nothing new.

Now, add AI into the mix. The book ignites a healthy conversation at a time when our well-being depends on how we treat ourselves more than ever before in history.

Take a look at the video I made about it if you are interested!

The chart of the week

Why are people talking about an “AI bubble”?

  • High Costs vs. Low Revenue:

    • AI expenses are enormous while revenue growth is slow.

    • Microsoft Azure's 26% growth in 2023 included minimal AI service revenue.

    • OpenAI reported $3.4 billion in annualized revenue but had significant losses.

  • Cost of AI Hardware:

    • Nvidia H100 chips cost around $30,000 each.

    • Sequoia’s David Cahn estimates $200 billion in lifetime revenue is needed to break even for current GPU investments.

    • The financial gap has reportedly tripled, highlighting massive expenditures.

  • Value Creation Issues:

    • Large Language Models (LLMs) are unreliable and pose data security risks.

    • Consumers need significant value, akin to services like Netflix, to justify AI expenses.

    • Success will come to companies delivering real-world value and maintaining realistic expectations.
