My mini survAIval insight of the week

Not a mini survAIval per se, but in light of Apple Intelligence, it’s time to talk about The Cloud and its promise of privacy security.

Like the internet, “the cloud” relies on tons of physical hardware. On the floor of the ocean, you will find a vast network of cables that connect modern society. Think of these cables like a data highway that makes the internet tick.  

But what the cloud actually refers to is a network of global remote servers. These servers exist in far-away datacenters, which consist of stacks of computing equipment (storage drivers, servers, network equipment, and computer chips) that consume an enormous amount of electricity and water.

It enables people and businesses to store, access, and run information and applications (Google Drive, Netflix shows, ChatGPT) through the internet rather than on-device.

Since Apple announced its AI integration, which will rely partially on the company’s new private cloud service, there has been a lot of concern about data security and privacy. 

It seems to be a secure cloud: no data retention, no privileged access for Apple, custom secure hardware, non-targetability (which masks user requests), and transparency.

AI is getting very popular among students and teachers, very quickly

Almost half of U.S. teachers and K–12 students say they are using ChatGPT weekly. Less than 20% of students say they never use generative AI.

Nearly 20% of teachers polled said ChatGPT had a negative impact, up from 7% last year.
