My mini survAIval insight of the week: The Age of Good Taste

Last week, Ben Affleck shared his thoughts on AI, and here’s the takeaway in my view: “Those who cultivate and refine good taste will thrive in the new era of AI.”

In an era where artificial intelligence increasingly automates tasks and generates content (over half of LinkedIn posts are AI-generated), the human ability to exercise discernment—what we might call "good taste"—becomes a critical differentiator. Those who cultivate this quality will find themselves uniquely valuable.

Defining Good Taste in the AI Era

At its core, good taste encompasses three critical dimensions:

  • Discernment and aesthetics: The ability to appreciate and differentiate nuances in quality, beauty, and style across various domains such as art, literature, design, and even decision-making.

  • Cultural and Emotional Intelligence: An understanding of cultural contexts and the emotional resonance of content, which AI may not fully grasp (many humans don’t, either).

  • Curation in an age of AI-generated abundance:

    • Quality Control: With an abundance of AI-generated content, the need for human curation becomes paramount to sift through and highlight what truly matters.

    • Setting Standards: Individuals with good taste can set quality benchmarks that guide both human and AI outputs. Good taste informs the selection of high-quality data used to train AI models, leading to better performance. Human discernment is essential in refining AI algorithms through thoughtful feedback.

The qualities that make something exceptional may not be immediately noticeable, but they contribute significantly to the depth, impact, and lasting impression of the work.

The subtle qualities that make something exceptional are often the result of deliberate intention, deep understanding, and a commitment to excellence. They require both creators and appreciators to look beyond the obvious and engage with the work on a deeper level. This demands time, patience, and uninterrupted focused attention—resources that are increasingly scarce in today's fast-paced world.

By recognizing and valuing these nuances, we enrich our experiences and contribute to a culture that celebrates true quality and artistry.

But is the culture we live in incompatible with the pursuit of good taste and meaningful, profound experiences?

The chart of the week: Performance of AI models on humanlike tasks

The chart shows the performance of AI models on different tasks like image classification, math, reading comprehension, language understanding, and visual reasoning capabilities over time. The key insights are:

  1. AI has made steady progress, with many capabilities surpassing human-level performance on specific tasks like image classification and math.

  2. The rates of progress vary across tasks; AI excels at well-defined tasks but still lags in areas requiring broader understanding, flexible reasoning, and common sense.

  3. The chart highlights both the strengths and limitations of current AI systems, suggesting further research is needed to close the remaining gaps compared to human abilities.

Overall, the chart provides a comprehensive view of the current state of AI performance, showing both its impressive advancements and the persistent challenges in developing truly human-level artificial intelligence.
