Have as many Yodas as you want!
How digital mentors can change your life
Bon dia, my friends.
"You are the average of the five people you hang out with the most." Fuck. This could be a doomed reality for some or a very lucky gift for others. Or is it still?
We normally spend a big chunk of time with family and colleagues, and we don't choose them.
It is not an easy task to find good friends, and it's even more difficult to see if they are pulling you down. Sometimes, we don't even choose them.
Now think about finding a person who makes you grow—an experienced and trusted adviser or a mentor.
Now, you can choose them.
Digital Mentors
Since we were kids, we learned from watching others act. I believe that our lives depend on finding the right people to watch so we can evolve.
Finding a mentor figure can be a great way to speed up your personal and professional growth. If you are lucky enough to find a mentor who is willing to invest in you.
In the old ages (30 years ago), if you didn't have the good fortune to find a mentor, you had to journey far and wide for enriching experiences, engage deeply in social interactions, and read books to absorb the wisdom of authors.
Much like needing to visit a country to truly learn its language, you once had to spend time with your mentor, getting to know and learning from them closely. By experiencing their ways and wisdom, you'd take what was beneficial for you and your goals.
It was a complete LUXURY to be able to do that. If you could find A mentor in your lifetime, you were a lucky fella.
What are digital mentors, and where can I find them?
Digital mentors are people and channels on digital platforms and social media that can inspire and motivate you, sharing their ideas and experiences through their content. When considering my digital mentors, these are some things that I look for:
Connect with, that makes me feel good listening to, and that inspires me in some way.
People who share their experience about how they solved their own problems (you can learn from everybody)
Experts in specific subjects
In the current day and age, digital mentors are an actual thing and are available to everyone at all times. What a time to live in!
How do you trust digital mentors?
They don't need to be older than you or have green skin and a beige cape with long extraterrestrial ears. No need to be Yoda.
Here are some things to keep in mind when looking for a digital mentor:
After interacting with several creators, you'll find one who truly resonates with you and feels right. What values do you share? What do you respect about them? Is he or she a good influence for you? Do you feel like you could trust them?
Be clear about your digital mentorship goals and find someone with the skills and knowledge you need. Align your goals with your strengths, follow what excites you, and be ambitious.
Put in the effort to make the digital relationship successful. I study their knowledge and skills and adapt them in my life
What I've gained from digital mentors that you can too
They helped me:
Develop my skills and knowledge
Set and achieve my goals
Make better decisions
Build my confidence
Navigate challenges and setbacks
Today's society sell us the story of "being strong and do it alone". They made us believe that the phrase "I did it by myself" makes us sound important. I am sure that these individuals who did it "alone", had some kind of help and support in the process, and there is nothing wrong with it. Everybody needs some help to evolve.
And what you really need is advice on how it worked for them, whatever it was.
I LOVE the idea of having digital mentors; it is the biggest gift a human can have.
I hope this can help you in any way.
More to come in the next few weeks!
Be kind,
Rafa TV
PS: And I know that what I am proposing here lacks an important part in the equation of mentoring: feedback. In my experience, this lack of direct feedback didn't stop me from learning A LOT, comparing different options, and keeping what worked for me, allowing me to grow.
We will probably solve this part of the equation in the next couple of years (months?) with the integration of AI, but... let’s not get distracted!
